This cold process recipe is designed for beginners. It has simple ingredients that are easy to work with. It's the perfect recipe to try cold process soap for the first time! 💮 Simple and Gentle Soap Project: 🤍 This recipe is made with coconut oil, palm oil, and olive oil. They’re commonly used because they complement each other well. Palm oil acts as a secondary lathering agent and hardens the soap, coconut oil is cleansing and produces big bubbles, and olive oil is moisturizing and gives the bars a silky feeling. 💮 Coconut Oil: 🤍 The soap is unscented and uncolored to keep things easy. Once you have a few batches under your belt, you can start experimenting with additives. For the mold, you can use almost any box or container that you have on hand. You'll just need to line it with freezer paper so the soap doesn't stick. 💮 Simple and Gentle Soap recipe: 8 oz. Coconut Oil (24%) 15 oz. Olive Oil (44%) 11 oz. Palm Oil (32%) 4.8 oz. Lye 11.2 oz. Distilled Water 💮 Key Terms: • Saponification: The chemical reaction that occurs when oil and lye molecules create new soap molecules. • Trace: The point when oils and lye water emulsify and begin to thicken. Once the soap has reached thin trace, it will continue to thicken as it sits. • Emulsify: When the oils and lye solution mix and don't separate. The term emulsify and trace are often used interchangeably. • Superfat: Any extra oil that's not turned into soap. • Gel phase: "Gelling" or "gel phase" refers to when the soap gets warm and gelatinous – up to 180° F. Gel phase results in brighter colors and a shinier, more translucent appearance. • Soda ash: When unsaponified lye reacts with naturally-occurring carbon dioxide in the air and creates a white ashy film on the bars. It only affects the way the soap looks, not the quality. Made this project? Tag us with #BrambleOn so we can see your creations! How to make soap. Easy, basic, 3 ingredient soap. 🤍bigfamilyhomestead.com #soapmaking . #Familyfriendly #howtomakesoap
Learning how to confidently make cold process soap was a game changer for me and our homestead. Not only was I able to reduce the cost of our family's expenses by buying organic soap but I also now had a product to sell and also a skill to teach. Firstly don't be put off by the fear of using caustic soda (also known as lye). Yes it's corrosive and can be dangerous to use but only if you're not following simple safety techniques. List of equipment (I didn't use all of this in my video but most of it comes in use when you start soapmaking). 2 food thermometers 2 pyrex or heatproof jugs (not metal) 2 spatulas and spoons for stirring Empty jam jar with lid Rubber gloves Face mask Protective eye goggles Silicone molds Stick blender Ingredients 234g Water 115g Caustic Soda (sodium hydroxide) 900g Extra Virgin Olive Oil* *Needs to be measured by weight and not measured in milliliters. Also do not try to use 'light' olive oil or substitute with any other oil as this will alter the soap and likely ruin the results. If this recipe is too big and you don't have a large enough pyrex jug you can halve the recipe. The reason I add the caustic soda to a jam jar first is so that I never accidentally pour the water into the lye (you must always pour the lye into the water). When you mix the caustic soda with the water try not to inhale the gases as they are very unpleasant (wearing a face mask is essential). Cover your benchtops with paper if you are worried about spilling the corrosive lye onto it (mine is a stone benchtop and is quite resistant to damage if I clean up splashes immediately). The soaps at the start of the video are all variations on this recipe. Some have Himalayan soap in them, others have dried herbs and flowers. Once you're confident in making this recipe you can play around with additives & essential oils to make interesting colours and lovely smells. Once your soaps have cured for 4 weeks they can be used and stored as you would a store bought soap. They last for years and make great presents for friends and family. *Safety tips (please read carefully before attempting to make cold process soap)* This is not safe for children to make, adult supervision is essential. Never ever touch lye solution with your bare hands, it will burn. If you do get some on your skin, run under cold water for at least 10 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately if you get any lye solution in your eyes. Do not leave your lye solution to cool where a child or pet could access it. 🤍riverbellcottage.com #coldprocesssoap #soapmaking #soapmakingforbeginners #oliveoil #soap #homediy #toxicfree #soaptutorial #homesteading #smallbusinessideas

Thank you for watching❣️ 🟢Learn to formulate your own soap recipes here: 🤍 🟢Etsy shop: 🤍 🟢Citric acid information: When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap. A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water. These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap. A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases. Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level. How much citric acid should be added to soap? Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight. How to use citric acid Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils. This is a simple recipe for 100% coconut oil soap that can be used for bathing. Coconut oil soap is well known for its great lather and strong cleaning power, but it can be drying to the skin, so this recipe uses a high 25% superfat to make the soap more gentle and suitable for bathing and hand washing. All the recipe details are below, including a half size and low superfat version of the recipe for cleaning. *Recipe details* The Video Recipe - 25% superfat - large batch 840g coconut oil 234g water (any drinking water is fine) This recipe uses a 2:1 water to lye ratio (33% lye concentration) for the water-lye solution. 115g sodium hydroxide / NaOH This recipe makes just under 1200g of soap (12 x 100g bars) You will need a mould that holds at least 1.2 litres or 40.5 fluid ounces of liquid to make this recipe. Half Sized Recipe - 25% superfat 420g coconut oil 117g water 57g sodium hydroxide / NaOH Lower superfat recipe for cleaning soap (will be drying on skin) 840g coconut oil 292g water 146g sodium hydroxide (5% superfat) METHOD as per video If you make the low superfat version for a cleaning soap, be prepared for it to saponify faster and go through a more vigorous and hotter 'gel phase', particularly if made in a loaf mould. Do not insulate this soap after it's poured, just leave it uncovered (it will get hot!). *New to soap making? This is important!* Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. In this video a make cold process soap with homemade coconut milk and lime juice. Thanks for watching! 🟢Learn to formulate your own soap recipes here: 🤍 🟢Etsy shop: 🤍 🟢Citric acid information: When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Lovely Greens is now on PATREON: 🤍 Rosemary is not only a delicious culinary herb, it also has therapeutic skin properties. One of which is that it's anti-bacterial and can help treat skin that suffers from pimples and acne. Combined with oil pulling Cambrian blue clay it makes an excellent soap for oily and problematic skin. This is how I make natural rosemary soap. It's made with natural vegetable oils, is free from palm oil, and that beautiful clay gives it a pretty blue color. Rosemary essential oil is what scents it but there's also fresh garden-grown rosemary for added texture and interest. ➤For the full recipe and instructions: 🤍 ➤ Get Cambrian Blue Clay USA*: 🤍 ➤ Get Cambrian Blue Clay UK*: 🤍 Learn how to make soap with my four-part natural soap-making series. NOTE: This video has been re-uploaded because I made an error in the last one. I said ashes have sodium hydroxide in them, when they really have potassium carbonate, which is converted to potassium hydroxide by treatment with calcium hydroxide or oxide. - I hate having to reupload, but the error was too big for me to let go. I do not like the idea of spreading misinformation. I hope you guys can understand! Link to Part 2: 🤍 Contest is OVER!: 🤍 Today, we are doing some more everyday chemistry.
