Russia has struck a deal with neighbouring Belarus to station tactical nuclear weapons on its territory but will not violate non-proliferation agreements, Putin said on 25 March. Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, had long raised the issue of stationing tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, which borders Poland, Putin told state television. 'We agreed that we will do the same - without violating our obligations, I emphasise, without violating our international obligations on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons,' said Putin.

Putin said the move was a response to Britain’s decision this past week to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium. Speaking in an interview broadcast Saturday on Russian state television, Putin said Russia would maintain control over the tactical nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus. He said storage facilities would be completed by July 1 but didn't say how many weapons they would hold. He argued that Russia was following the lead of the United States, which has tactical nuclear weapons based in Europe. Russia’s President Putin has warned that if the UK goes ahead with plans to supply Ukraine with shells containing depleted uranium, then Russia will be forced “to respond”. The warning came on the second day of a visit to Moscow by China’s President Xi. Vladimir Putin told the UK that Russia would be “forced to take action accordingly” if the UK supplies the weapons. He suggested it amounted to an escalation towards the use of nuclear arms. In response the UK said depleted uranium had been used in munitions for decades and had nothing to do with nuclear weapons. Depleted uranium’s great density and mass mean it can add to the effectiveness of armour-piercing weapons. The Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his country’s strategic nuclear forces to high alert, as the Ukraine crisis escalates. He told defence chiefs it was because of "aggressive statements" by the West, amid widespread condemnation of his invasion of Ukraine. The announcement does not mean Russia intends to use the weapons. The US immediately condemned his decision calling it an "unacceptable escalation". Recently Mr Putin had warned that "whoever tries to hinder us" in Ukraine would see consequences "you have never seen in your history". Those words were widely interpreted as signalling a threat to use nuclear weapons if the West stood in his way. The Russian President ordered his defence minister and the chief of the military's general staff to put the nuclear deterrent forces on a "special regime of combat duty". Russia has struck a deal with neighbouring Belarus to station tactical nuclear weapons on its territory but will not violate non-proliferation agreements, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has long raised the issue of stationing tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, which borders Poland, Putin told state television. "We agreed that we will do the same — without violating our obligations, I emphasize, without violating our international obligations on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons," Putin said. Russia will have completed the construction of a storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus by July 1, Putin said, adding that Moscow would not actually be transferring control of the arms to Minsk. Russia has stationed 10 aircraft in Belarus capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons, he said, adding that Moscow had already transferred to Belarus a number of Iskander tactical missile systems than can be used to launch nuclear weapons.
