Our health both mental and physical is a great determinant on how we live and die. Hope and hopelessness, rather than opposites, are companions in this journey, says playwright Murray Watts. The opposite of hope turns out to be something quite corrosive, but something that we are all equipped to rise above. More About Murray... In a career lasting forty years, Murray Watts has written many plays for theatre and radio, and numerous screenplays for TV and film. His work as a playwright, screenwriter and children's writer has won awards nationally and internationally. His stage plays have appeared on the London Fringe and Trafalgar Studios in the West End and major theatres throughout the UK, culminating in a season of his plays at The King's Head Theatre, London, in January 2012. His most recent play The Kiss was premiered at the Oran Mor Theatre in Glasgow in November 2011. Screenplays include: The Dream starring Jeremy Irons and The Miracle Maker which was released in Britain and Europe at the Millennium and won the MovieGuide Epiphany Prize as the most inspirational film on US TV in 2001. In the early 1990s, Murray Watts was the co-author of the BBC book, 'Relax: Dealing with Stress,' and wrote and co-presented the network TV series of the same name with organisational psychologist Professor Cary L Cooper. In the 1997 extended edition of the book, 'Stop The World', he developed new material on the subject of hope and human survival. In the same year, he became the director of The Wayfarer Trust, based at Freswick Castle in Caithness, a charity which he founded to provide encouragement, inspiration and hope in the world of the arts and media. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. (I'm really sorry for my descriptions always turning into essays, I'm doing my best to tone it down.. This one is basically me explaining that I love Sokka, so you can skip it if you'd like :P) I needed to make a video of Sokka on this song. Why? Because 1) I'm in love with Mumford and Sons, I started maaany projects on their songs and none have been finished till now, and 2) I'm a bit disappointed in people seeing Sokka just as 'the funny guy'. Of course, this is one of his most outspoken trades, but he's more than that. So I wanted to make a more serious video for him, I appreciate his other side just as much/it's the thing that makes me love him. Even if he is alone in a way (his sister & most of his friends being able to bend), he uses his own strength to his best ability, doing everything he can to make his father proud. He lives with his heart. When he thinks people he loves would be in too much danger and doesn't agree with something, he says so. He's honest with himself. He's intelligent. He stands for what he believes in. And that's why he is BY FAR my favorite male character of ATLA, no contest. No offense, entire fandom, I don't mind you fighting over Zuko & Aang, or Iroh, whoever, I'll keep it with this hero. There's much more I'd like to say but I promised to keep it short..ish. I feel personally offended sometimes when he's being left out (for example in AMVs, 'he's not interesting enough to vid'), because he's a key-character and without him Aang never would've won. And if you disagree.. uhm.. there won't happen anything because I'm sure many of you do, but it'd still hurt me a bit. Because he was my first anime (well cartoon okay) crush and I still love him. I don't think if the video turned out the way I wanted it to and Sony Vegas really hated me during this, so I might have to make another one in the future. Which I wouldn't mind because Sokka is so incredibly amusing to vid. That was me toned down. Haha. Ha. Today we will reflect on the experience of hope and the mechanics of building hope. We will be asking together: “What have I done in the past to experience the calm that has come from hope? Hope is essential nourishment for our spirts. With hope, we are able to endure in difficulty and flourish in ease. Hope is based in our ability to imagine a fulfilling future story about our life. We have hope in the present when we can define what that satisfying future might reasonably be. When pieces of our future story change or are lost, we can feel a loss of hope. We might grieve. Hope can be revived by reconstructing the foundation and the building blocks of a new future story. As we recall the cornerstones that anchor our future story, we reestablish our hope. As we place down new details of our future story, we strengthen our hope. Expanding hope often is accompanied by inner calm. So what are the cornerstones of your future story – of your hope? Is faith a cornerstone, or perhaps commitment to your work? Do family or loving friends ground your story? How central is your ability to create, or your capacity to be in nature? And what are some of the building blocks of your future story – of your hope? Do you imagine sharing gratitude, or daily prayer, or the renewal that comes from silence? Will you design time to learn, or retreat, or play? Do you vision strength in your body, or acceptance of your emotions?
