Get your free proof of concept for TuxCare: 🤍 Most of you probably know that you can only run macOS on hardware that Apple sells, at least if you're not willing to go the hackintosh route, which can be painful and complex. Still, some of us might want, or need to test stuff out on Apple's operating system, fortunately, there is now a simple solution to do just that, with just one command line. Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 The Linux Experiment merch: get your goodies there! 🤍 Link to SOSUMI: 🤍 How to install snap: 🤍 Mac OS Simple KVM: 🤍 Sosumi is a SNAP package that lets you install a Qemu virtual machine running Mac OS Catalina. It's nothing you couldn't do on your own with a bit more time, but this snap package has the advantage of being just one command line away, and taking care of all the setup for you. Now be warned that Apple's End User Licence Agreement doesn't allow to run Mac OS in a VM on hardware that isn't made by Apple, so do this at your own risk! As always with virtual machines, you need to ensure that your CPU supports virtualization in the BIOS. Once you're all set, you just open a terminal window, and run this command: sudo snap install sosumi Let the installation run its course, and you should get a menu entry called, you guessed it, SOSUMI. Run that to initialize the VM. You should get a terminal window which shows you the download progress for the system image that will let you install macOS. Click inside the window to focus is, and then press enter to start the installer. After a while, you should end up in the installer window for Mac OS. To begin with, you'll have to format the virtual disk that the VM has created for you. Double click on "disk utility", and select the disk called "Apple Inc. VirtIO Block media", with a size of 68Gb. Then, click on "Erase", and select the format you'd prefer using, I used APFS, as that's the most recent Apple Filesystem, but it will work fine if you use Mac OS Extended. Click the "Erase" button. The operation should be pretty fast, and you can then close the disk utility window, and start the installer by double clicking on "Reinstall macOS". Once the installation is complete, your VM will reboot and let you complete the first-run setup. You'll end up in Clover again. One last reboot, and you'll be able to select the "Boot mac OS frm Mac HD" option in Clover, the last option on the right. Once the boot process is complete, you'll have to sift through a few settings screen, and log in using an Apple ID, or create one if you don't already have one. Close the VM by shutting it down, and open your file manager. Snaps create a folder in your /home directory, to store everything, so head over there, and go to Sosumi, then Common. Here, you'll find a file called "launch". First, make a copy, in case something goes wrong, so you can restore the previous version, open the file with your text editor of choice. In this file, you'll see all the parameters for the Qemu virtual machine. -m defines the memory usage of the VM, in gigabytes. By default, it's 2, but as I have 32Gb on my device, I'll put 16 in there. Now, for the window resolution, it's a bit more involved. Type diskutil list Grab the identifier for the disk that reads EFI, it should be the same as mine, disk2s1. Then type sudo diskutil mount disk2s1 or replace disk2s1 by the correct identifier for your EFI disk. Now open the Finder, and go to the EFI disk in the sidebar. Open the CLOVER folder, and ediut the config.plist file, using textedit. Here, you'll find a line that reads screenresolution. Change the default of 1280x720 by what you want to use, in my case, 1920x1080. Save the file. Now, shut down the VM, and restart it. Right when you see the terminal window open, hit "escape". You'll see an interface that looks like a BIOS. Select device manager, OVMF Platform Configuration and then "change preferred". Press the F10 key to save, and then escape until you get back to the main menu, where you'll then select "Continue". You can also change the CPU core count affected to the VM. By default, you'll get 4 threads for 2 cores, listed in the line "-smp 4,cores=2". You can change that by putting another number.

Mac OS goes for the global menu, which I like. The dock itself just hosts open application, and open windows for apps that aren't in the dock, plus it has the trashcan, recent applications, and a few nice features. It also has one very annoying limitation: you can't minimize an app by clicking on its icon, which is very, very frustrating. The desktop holds icons, by default, only your disk drives, but you can store anything you want there, with a nice feature: the ability to automatically stack files by file type. In terms of options and look and feel, you find a light or dark mode, with an auto switch depending on the time of day, and accent colors. Finally, to run applications, you either launch them from the dock, or you have a full screen app grid with search, that works pretty much like the GNOME app grid. You get the excellent Spotlight, which lets you search for virtually anything;: files, apps, settings, webpages, you name it. Window management on mac is a nightmare. You get the close button, the maximize button, and the minimize button. The close button doesn't close the app, it closes the window. If you minimize the the app's icon, and you have multiple windows minimized, clicking on the app's icon will only bring back the last window you minimized. Subsequent clicks don't do anything. Then there's the maximize button, which doesn't only maximize, but takes the window full screen. If you press the ALT key and then click on the green button, then your window will not maximize, or go full screen, it will just expand to fit as much of the content as it can. Then there's the tiling. You can't just drag a window to an edge of the screen to tile it. You have to long press the green button to access a small submenu that lets you pick an edge to tile the window. Now there's a good part, still, the Multitasking view, called Mission control. You can access it with an icon on the dock, a hot corner, or a keyboard shortcut. Again, good idea, mediocre implementation. the GNOME activities view beats that without breaking a sweat. On to application updates and installing them. Here, your default option is the mac app store. It's a beautiful face on a not so well stocked app selection. We could learn a thing or two about how they present apps. They have editorial content presenting stuff users might need, by type of activity, they present the most used and downloaded apps first, something we still don't do. If you can't find what you're loking for on the Store, then you can still resort to the "hunt online for a downloadable app" solution. What you get in the process is a DMG file, which is a disk image. TO install your app, you have to open the DMG file, and then drag the application to your Applications folder. Sounds simple on paper, and most DMG files have some kind of visual explanation to let users know they need to drag the app into the folder. The issue here, is that I've met a number of people who never understood that. They open the app from the DMG image.

Instead, you'll have to long press the green button in the window controls, and select a screen half. Other window management issues include the inability to click a minimized window in the dock to restore it, or the lack of thumbnails of windows in the actual alt tab switcher. MacOS will introduce stage manager in its newer version, Ventura, as an optional feature, and it does look interesting. Second aspect where Linux is better than macOS is software installation. First, while experienced users will have no trouble understanding that you need to download a DMG image, then open it, then drag the app bundle into your Applications folder, i've seen a LOT of new mac users never picking up on that. The app store, while it looks nice, is just not fully stocked. Due to Apple's guidelines and limitations, a lot of apps can't be distributed through it. And the security certificates will annoy you with popups not letting you run applications unless you voluntarily go into the settings to disable that feature either one time, or always. And linux might have multiple packaging formats, but they all end up inside a graphical app store where you can see who they're from, and download them easily in one click, and if you still prefer the macOS model of single file apps, you have Appimages. Next point is hardware choices. Sure, these new macs are probably the best value in terms of design, performance, and battery life for laptops. But if their lineup doesn't have what you're looking for, or if you don't have 1000 dollars and more to spend, you're out of Luck. Linux hardware support might not be 100% perfect, with some wifi and bluetooth cards not fully supported, or power management not being perfect on some devices, but generally, it will run on any device. Next point is security and privacy. macOS has more market share than Linux desktops, and as such, is more exposed to threats, and targeted more often. Linux servers are targeted a lot, but generally through vulnerabilities that affect server related libraries, which you won't have on your desktop or laptop. Linux is a smaller target, and it's also more of a moving target, with distros using wildly different systems and libraries, which means your trojan, ransomware, or virus, won't affect every distro, when writing something for a version of macOS will definitely hurt all users of that version. And another point is customization. macOS is to be taken as-is. You can change an accent color, the position of the dock, and a few third party utilities might let you tweak some minor elements but that's it. Linux, on the other hand, is completely open to this. You can pick any underlying system and change it, you can change the layout of your desktop, the colors, the theme, the workflow, the window manager, the apps, the packaging system, anything you want. Whether that's through the use of a specific distro, or through your own ricing skills, your Linux desktop can be exactly how you like it, where a mac will only suit you if you like how macOS works.

In this video, I compare Mac OSX vs Linux and go over its history and which is truly the best for you. Before we do a straight comparison we need to understand where they come from and the differences between them. Timestamps: 1:01 Linux History 2:11 Mac OSX History 4:35 Why Choose Linux? 6:18 Why Choose Mac? History Unix To understand either OSX or Linux you need to know about UNIX. It is basically the father to many of what we see today, but there is a reason no one uses Unix anymore. In the late 80s and early 90s AT&T held the UNIX Licenses for part of the kernel and ip stack and proceed to litigate anyone that used UNIX without paying. AT&T effectively killed UNIX. Linux First off, Linux is NOT UNIX and is NOT a fork of UNIX. It originally looked and acted like UNIX but this is a common misconception. It originated from a collaboration done by Linux Torvalds with the GNU (GNU is NOT UNIX) Project (Richard Stallman from MIT) and Minix (Andrew Tanenbaum). Both these projects were coded entirely from scratch with completely free licensing. From here it has been developed from the early 90s to today. Mac OSX The first Macs from the 80s and 90s used a FAR different version than today. This kernel is nothing like OSX today. Macintosh 1 to 9 was not UNIX based and was very proprietary. I suggest watching Jobs, Pirates of Silicon Valley, or various other films to get a broad understanding of them. In 2001 Mac OS 10 was born, and it was based on UNIX or to be more specific NeXTStep which acquired in the late 90s. NeXTStep was based on BSD which used some UNIX code but in 1991 it managed to strip out all the AT&T code and also convert to Free licensing.
