Japanese Tools Australia was honored to be invited into the forge of Ouchi-san, master of many aspects of Japanese smithing and esecially renowned for his beautiful chisels. Here he laminates blue paper steel (Aogami) cutting edges and forges the shape of his chisels in preparation for grinding and finishing.
Framing chisels are large woodworking chisels designed to be driven with a mallet rather than being operated by hand. In this video, blacksmith Walter Sorrells shows how he makes a chisel for his own woodworking hobby. Includes forging, wood turning, heat treating and grinding to shape with a belt grinder. Framing chisels can be use for timber framing, cutting mortises and tenons, etc. This chisel is on the small end of framing chisels, but it generally fits into that category. Like the videos? I needed a chisel, so I decided to forge one myself! Some hex bar was the perfect shape, and using my mini keg forge made the rest pretty easy! A pretty simple DIY, but then again, a chisel isn't exactly rocket science. The heat treating kind of worried me, I wasn't sure what type of steel the hex bar was (what the carbon content was) and it's much thicker than a knife blade so I wasn't sure how much oil it would soak up during a quench. After trying it out on progressively harder metals, 1/8" mild steel started to give me a bit of chipping so I'll call that the limit. Mainly though, I needed this chisel for chipping away granite, so being able to cold cut metal was overkill anyway. ► Enable closed captions for commentary ► GIF image gallery of the build here: ► SUBSCRIBE : 🤍 ► INSTAGRAM: 🤍
