Hello everyone🙌. I built this belt sander using a simple power tool and junk I found in the workshop. I'm sure you can do the same, or even better! Work process: To make a drive roller without using a lathe, I took plywood and a jigsaw. The plywood is strong enough and is perfect as a drive roller. I cut the circles of the desired diameter with a jigsaw and glued them together with wood glue. For greater reliability, I pulled these circles with two long self-tapping screws. Then I fixed this workpiece on the motor shaft and using an angle grinder and a chisel, gave a round shape to my workpiece. I made the driven roller using several bearings and a bolt. I made the frame of the grinder from a sheet of iron 6 mm thick. I showed the whole process in the video, I think you will like it! FRIENDS ATTENTION! I started a new channel on YouTube. 🤍 🤍 I needed a way to sand curved drawer fronts for the Dressing Mirror project in episodes 5&6 of Woodcademy TV Season 2. The parts are too wide at 4" to use a drill press drum sander. But with a lathe it is very easy to create the perfect sanding solution in just a few minutes work. This info also appeared in the 2Sand.com Blog of April 2019
I found myself in need of a drum sander and wasn't about to spend $1500 on one so I built my own. My intent was to keep it as cheap as possible and to make it as fast as possible. I designed it around the materials I had on hand, I only needed to purchase $60 worth of supplies. I already had an electric motor salvaged from an old pool pump, and plenty of MDF and 2x4 scrap. It only took me 3 days after work to finish, around 9 hours. It works perfectly well for my needs. Maybe in the future I'll make a better one with an automatic feed table, but for right now I'm very happy with how this project turned out. After getting some more sanders in the shop I quickly ran into the case of having them laying all over my benches. The only CReeves Makes solution was to whip up a quick rack for them. I wanted to just use super glue and see how long it would hold up. I simply traced a rough pattern on some ply and used my jigsaw to cut it out. I used a 45° chamfer underneath to relive the material and allow the sanders to sit fully into the rack. Then I was able to trace the sander profile a bit better and sand to the lines with my spindle sander. This has been a few months now and its still holding strong! All 1/2" plywood and Starbond CA glue! The pads do not touch the wood and there has been zero deformation on the backing pads from sitting in the rack as well.
